I’ve been working again with In the London Borough of Redbridge with the Redbridge User Led organisation…. and their partners Redbridge Concern and Redbridge Link.
They were working on the Local Authorities Draft Strategy around “Early Intervention and Prevention in Health and Social Care” and were ensuring participation and full involvement of service users by having a large public consultation involving many citizens of the area.
I worked on a large graphic to capture the themes and outcomes of the day, hopefully ensuring full involvement from all present and creating a group memory too.
I didn’t have much preparation time nor was I involved in designing the facilitative process to collate the large groups thoughts (there were approximately 80 people present) however, Jon from Redbridge concern a great local mental health support group did share the strategy with me beforehand… so i had some idea of the themes… But the day itself involved totally thinking on my feet to create the visual metaphor and try my best to map out the ideas so it would make sense to one and all.
I really enjoyed working with them all…. I hope they liked it… and I hope I get to work with them again.
the original graphic was approx 10 feet long by 4 feet deep.

mindovermatterzine asked: Thank you so much for your submission. I took a look at your page, and the work you are doing is brilliant. I spent last summer interning for a company called thinkpublic who also specialize in social innovation / co-design and found the whole experience inspiring. Keep up the brilliant work!
Thanks heaps! your comments are well and truly appreciated…. Really appreciate you sharing my work.
all the best,

yurig asked: Man, your work is awesome. I really think it's a fantastic way to explain things. A few days ago you liked a post that I published, it was a speech of David Harvey related with capitalism crisis, it was your job?
Hey Yurig,
No… It wasn’t me… but I love the work of RSA… and the video’s they make are fantastic! I wish I could get commissioned to make some of these… it would be great to be able to really have time to prepare and map out the content to really get all the visual metaphors just right.
Most of the ‘graphic recording’ jobs I get are to make a graphic live… during an event, training day or conference. and I don’t often get much warning of the content of the session.
I love getting my teeth stuck into a piece of work where i can give thought to the finished graphic and do a bit of preparation… like the “family leadership tree”… that was a good one to do… and the finished graphic was massive and of real value to families of kids with disabilities…
thanks for your kind words though Friend! very much appreciated!

This is a Graphic recording of a session led by the Inspirational Alan Tyne at a ‘Partners In Policymaking’ training course. Partners In Policymaking is a leadership course for Adults with a disability and parents of young people with a disability or additional needs.
This Graphic, which was produced over an hour and a half, with little or no prior knowledge of the sessions content, shows the history of the disability movement in the UK.
The purpose of the Graphic record is to create a group memory, to be a live interesting set of visual minutes and as it was happening before the participants eyes…. They’ll have a personal connection to the content. Each learner got to take a copy away to reflect on afterwards.
the original graphic was approx 10 feet wide x 4 feet deep

Family Leadership:
Tied in to the personalisation agenda of social care and the continual desire and self-determination by individuals and their families to take control of their services and supports, this graphic which is approx 8 feet wide by four feet deep, was arranged, mapped out and developed during a facilitated meeting with a group of families of people with a disability and their allies to show:

Working with the Creative Community in Colchester
A bit of work from last summer…. I facilitated a visioning meeting around the planning group for a music festival in Colchester.
The Festival itself was huge success. A genuine community event pulling together the whole community to put on a funky, creative event for around 15,000 people.
The vision really became a reality.

It was really good to see our Community Pod getting its first official use last week. It provided valuable collaboration space for the core team of volunteers behind Colchester Free Festival – a one day music and arts event from 11am to 7pm in Castle Park on Saturday 18th September.

A Picture is worth 1000 words
The power of Graphic Recording/Facilitation is that when a group draws out and agrees on an exciting pictorial representation of their desired future they are more likely to make it happen
